After several days of high winds whipping up Gull Lake, last night the winds died down and the lake was like a mirror. As you can see, it has a smooth layer of ice, and ice skaters would be in heaven IF it froze solid enough to support them.

After the days where the temperatures were in the 40s and nighttime temps were in the 30s and 40s, the ice completely melted. Then the temps dropped to mid-30s during the day and into the 20s at night. We awoke to a skim of ice nearly every morning for the past few days. In this photo, you can see the ice out from the dark blue house at the far left and continuing out toward the island (the smooth surface). As my husband and I were watching, the wind increased somewhat from the South and pushed even this bit of ice halfway past the island. There still is some slush South of us toward the Bay that is pushed up against the West side of the narrower part leading the to the Bay. It’s been a daily show to watch the ice melt, reform, melt again and move by wind and wave action.

After some of our warm days, the ice completely disappeared for several days and we have open waters.

The ice is still in place but with lots of rainwater on top. The swans seem to like it even though there is no open water for them at this time. 1-24-24

Here’s more open water on 1-19-24, with Trumpet swans swimming in front of our home, and still some patches of ice.

This photo was taken 1/1/24 before the Gull Lake was frozen. We even had green grass still showing.
